Many extra ordinary things have happened
before the colony of South Australia was proclaimed on 19 February 1836.
This section will try to highlight some of them.

Pieter
Nuyts and Francois Thijssen sailed east as far as present day Smoky Bay.


1688
4 January, Dampier lands at King Sound, New Holland (WA).
1766
John Byron completed first circumnavigation of the world.
1767
Tahiti discovered by the British on 19 June.
1774
Matthew Flinders born in Lincolnshire.
1778
Banks elected President of the Royal Society.

1786
Colonel William Light born.
1788
Aboriginal population in South Australia estimated at 15,000.
1789
Smallpox epidemic killed numerous South Australian Aborigines.
Robert Torrens born in Ireland.
George Fife Angas born in Newcastle.
1791
Several convicts, including Mary Bryant escaped in March
Pandora wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef in August.
1792
Bruni D'Entrecasteaux sailed along part of the coast discovered by Nuyts and Thijssen.
1796
Edward Gibbon Wakefield born in London on 20 March.
1798
August Kavel, Lutheran Pastor, born.
1800
James Grant sailed along the south east coast of South Australia and named
Mount Gambier and Mount Schanck.
1802
Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin charted the unexplored coast of South Australia.
August Short born on 11 June.
1803
First recorded European occupancy of Kangaroo Island.
Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet mapped Upper Spencer Gulf.
Walter Hughes, (Sir) pastoralist and mine owner, born.

First map of part of South Australia's coast published in France.

John Ridley born.

English Parliament abolished the slave trade.
1811
Richard Moritz Schomburgh born.
1812
Robert Richard Chute Torrens born.
1813
Buffalo built in Calcutta, named the Hindoostan.

James Martin, Manufacturer, born.

George French Angas born.

Charles Todd born in London on 7 July.

Wakefield sentenced to three years imprisonment.
John Riddoch, founder of Coonawarra born.

National Colonization Society formed in England.

Collett Barker saw inlet of the Port River.
Captain John Hart visited Kangaroo Island.

Father Julian Edmund Tenison Woods, priest and scientist, born.

Charles Sturt's Two Expeditions into the Interior of Southern Australia published.
Adam Lindsay Gordon, MP, poet and steeplerchaser, born.

Peter Waite born on 9 May.
The South Australian Colonisation Act passed.
Captain John Jones, whaler and sealer, discovered Port Adelaide.
1835
South Australian Company established. Colonisation Commission founded in May.
1836
Letters Patent issued on 19 February proclaiming South Australia.
First immigrants arrived at Kangaroo Island on 27 July.
1836
Invasion of Kaurna tribal land had started.
